oneword.com

I launched this site in 2003 as a simple writing exercise for my own personal enjoyment. Shortly thereafter it became quite popular and had a steady stream of people coming to write each day. All was well until I switched servers and everything stopped working about a year and a half ago.

Finally, after countless inquiries, I re-launched the site a couple of weeks ago.

The site is designed to create a balance between your creative, flowing side and your logical thinking side.

You click “go” and a word comes up and you have 60 seconds to type whatever that word brings to mind as quickly as you can.

There are no fancy words here. The words are intentionally very simple so that no time is spent trying to define things.

This exercise, as simple as it may seem, will help you on many levels, so try it:

Don’t think. Just write...

Hi, I put a link to oneword on my blog, and got a comment from someone saying that their word had been 'cone'. This is the same word that I got when I did it a couple of days ago. So I checked and I got 'cone' again. Wondered if you knew that the word is staying the same and not changing every day. It's a great site, and I enjoyed writing my paragraph or two.

Arvind,

I'd just like to let you know that I admire the work you've put into Oneword. It's interesting to note how just a single word can provoke so much insight on one's own beliefs and inner workings.

You have my hopes that this site continues to thrive for years to come.

My brain was fuzzy this morning and I was only halfway through my first cup of coffee. Oneword forced me to wake up as though I was on cup number three. Love it!

Thanks for maintaining such an entertaining site. For the past week or so I've been looking forward to 60 seconds of frantic creation.

Well, OK I'll admit to going over once or twice. No more than 70 seconds, honest.

G'Day,

I recently stumbled across _oneword_. The succinct presentation was most intriguing, and I could not resist having a go!

Although I have only attempted the initially somewhat daunting task of a kerouac-style stream-of-consciousness literary spew a few times, I find myself wanting to visit every day...

Geez, that was a bit of a wank wasn't it? Hmmm.. it's helping already ;)

Love it. This is a wonderful writing exercise. Every morning I find myself racing to be the first :)

I have a couple of suggestions. You wrote in the Help section (which I can't seem to locate again) that this is not about defining the word, nor stressing about not knowing the word. How about providing a definition or two along with it? That might solve both problems.

Also, I like to read what other people have written, but sometimes I really want to let them know that theirs was great, stood out from the rest. How difficult would it be to enable comments on one another's entries?

Again, awesome idea. Reminds me alot of NaNoWriMo.

Hello!

I was hoping you could answer a question of mine. I see that the word doesn't change everyday. Would it be possible to maybe.. you know, fix that? I'd like to sit and write something short and sweet everyday, just not about the same word! Haha.

Nonetheless! I love the idea; I've always wanted to try it myself. I love that you've made it public! :)

Thank you so much for putting this site back up... I stumbled upon it a few days ago (like many of these commenters, apparently), and I was stuck in a writing rut at the time. This site helped get my creative juices flowing again, and I will be coming back whenever I can to see what comes out of my strange little mind.

Amazing! - Timed word prediction/expansion based on user-elaborated text. WOW, I may have to come back every day - and definitely will recommend this exercise for Neat (Geeky) TechnoKids and their friends!

I am completely addicted to this site and, as an addict, must have more. Any chance of hooking this up to a dictionary file/database and coming off with random selections? This should remove the need to update it daily.

thank you for creating this great site! It's what I've needed to prompt me to write.

Hey Arvind..I absolutely LOVE the idea of oneword. It's exactly what I need at this point in my life, and I'm not kidding.

But..I keep getting the same word. The first time I dropped by oneword, I got the word 'suspend'. I've tried many days in a row but I still get 'suspend', and nothing else.

Please please please anyone, help :(

Great site! I have shared it with several teacher friends of mine, and we all agree it is a fantastic tool. Like several others before me, I would like to know how often the word changes. Thanks!

Just sayin
Important people always have "staff" and credit goes to leaders always. LOL, That's also happening in the world works.
Sullivan is supposed to be this terrific, important writer/blogger...
that isn't the only one who looks bad after this discovery, and Sullivan really is the "gold standard" in blogging, but these days people's writing mostly for money,How to develop a best earning source?

Thanks for that closing line, it really made me happy.
